Bethel Green SeniorsSeniors Life Lease Apartments
Client: Bethel Baptist Church
Program: 21 Seniors Apartments New Church for 80 Parishioners
Cost: $3.6 million
![]() Though there has been a declining membership in the church, it has stabilized at about 60 members. They are unable to maintain their existing large church on the site though they still want to maintain the congregation. It was decided to build a Seniors Life lease project for 21 apartments of varying sizes for 1 and 2 bedroom units. To reflect the existing church character the new building is to be built of limestone at the main level with brick for the floors above. The limestone finish extends to the trim around the windows and doors as well as the coping around the roof. To meet the needs of the church, it was located on the main floor at the corner of Millwood and Whitewood Roads with the sacristy at the east end. The existing stained glass windows are to be saved and reinstalled in the curved wall behind the new sacristy.
![]() The entrance for the church is to be kept separate from the entrance to the apartments by locating it off Whitewood while the apartments entrance is off Millwood. A church tower and three dimensional cross was incorporated in the corner of the building to maintain the church’s physical presence in the community. A 26 space parking garage is accessed off Whitewood for both the church and the apartments. With a flexible plan for the a lounge on the main floor, it overlooks the street and can be linked to the church hall to accommodate large gatherings. The apartments are spacious, many with large balconies. The selection of energy efficient products were as aspect of how the building meets the Kyoto Enegry Standards. Features for 'Aging-in-Place' are included, especially a stairway promenade to encourage physical activity by seniors.
